February, 2016 Brain Teaser

Question:

You have done well on your New Year's Resolutions and go buy eight jelly donuts to celebrate your effort.  The donuts all weigh the same amount except one which is heavier.  You have a balancing scale on a table next to your donuts.  What's the minimum numer of weighings required for you to pick out the heavy donut?

Answer:

The minimum number of weighings required is 2:

1. Weigh 3 donuts on either side of the scale, with two on the table
2. If they are equal, weigh the two on the table to find the heavy one
3. If they are not equal, take the heavier side and weigh two of those while leaving the third on the table
4.  Of those, if they are equal, the heavier one is on the table, and if not, you can tell which one is heavier from the scale
